The very first (and hopefully not the last) Garnett Public Library Community Spelling Bee was held on Sunday, Feb. 5th. We had 9 enthusiastic teams who participated. There was some bribery, some contraband, some spelling and a LOT of fun. "The Spelling Wizards" were the winning team. This Harry Potter inspired trio, consisted of Harry's cousin Jennifer Sibley, Tonya Arnett, and Diane Hastert. They won by correctly spelling "testaceous" and then spelling "covenant" for the win. The second place team was "The Stellar Spellars. Team members were Venus (Jackie Gardner), Andromeda (Connie Fagg) and Sirius (Betty Lewis). First prize for team costumes was also "The Wizards", 2nd place was "The Stingers", 3rd place went to "The Knowledgable Nerds". See below for pictures of all the fun.

Our Boys Book Discussion

The Garnett Public Library will be hosting a book discussion of the book "Our Boys : A perfect season on the plains with the Smith Center Redmen" by Joe Drape This book was chosen by the Kansas Center for the Book as the 2012 Kansas Reads Book. "Our Boys" is an inspiring portrait of the extraordinary high school football team whose quest for perfection sustains its hometown in the heartland. The Smith Center football team won sixty-seven games in a row. They did it by embracing a philosopy of life taught by their legendary coach, Roger Barta : "Respect each other, then learn to love each other, and together we are champions." The discussion will be led by Mike Sibley on Thursday, Feb. 9th at 7:00 p.m in the Archer Room. Books are available for check-out at the library.

WINTER GETAWAY XI

This year’s plans include a kick-off party Monday, January 16^th at 7 p.m. in the Archer Room here at the library. There will be refreshments served, an explanation of the program, a get acquainted activity and a prize or two. Everyone eighteen years of age and older is welcome to participate. On Wednesday, February 1^st will be the midway event. The Winter Getaway Program will conclude on Friday, February 24^th with a celebration party on Monday, February 27^th at 7 p.m. in the Archer Room at the library.

We want to encourage adults to read. If you are already a reader or haven’t read in awhile, come join the fun. This event is designed to allow a reader to choose their own material and their own pace. A minimum of five books read will make you eligible for the grand prize drawing.

Read-a-Thon

On January 10th we will be hosting a Read-a-thon at the library. From 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., various library patrons and community members will be reading aloud at the library. They will all choose their favorite book to read aloud for 15 minutes at a time. Be sure and stop by the library and listen to see what is being read.

A Taste of the Holidays

The Garnett Public Library, along with generous support from the Friends of the Library, will be hosting
“A Taste of the Holidays” on Wednesday, December 14th. The event will take place in the Archer Room at the library from 11a.m. to 1:30 p.m. It is a come when you can event. There will be sandwiches and goodies galore accompanied by holiday music.

This idea has been borrowed from other libraries to simply wish their patrons a happy holiday season. The staff invites you to come and spend a little time with us.

Friends of the Library Annual Meeting

Monday, November 7th, 6:00 p.m.

Garnett Public Library

Setting: A secret meeting with abolitionists interested in helping the Underground Railroad in Kansas Territory, early autumn, 1860.

Please join us for a 1st person reenactment of the life of Mary Jane Shelledy Ritchie (1821-1880) who moved to Topeka, Kansas Territory, in 1855. She lived in Topeka the rest of her life, working with her husband, John Ritchie, as an abolitionist, suffragist, real estate investor and philanthropist.

This program will be presented by a native Kansan, Anne Hawkins who grew up in a 19th-century limestone farmhouse, tapping the walls in closets and examining floorboards, hoping to find secret passageways and hidden rooms where escaped slaves could harbor. Anne teaches U.S. history at Washburn University, and classes in U.S. history and world history for home-educated students ages 7-16 in northeast Kansas. Anne has worked in education at the Kansas State Historical Society, served as state co-coordinator for the Kansas History Day program for students in grades 5-12, and judged at National History Day. She was a historical consultant for the Kansas Humanities Council “Shared Stories of the Civil War” project

A light meal of soups and dessert will be served. A very brief business meeting will be held for the Friends of the Library Annual Meeting. EVERYONE is welcome to attend.

Summer Events at the Library

It is gearing up to be a busy summer at the library. Monday was the kick off for the Summer Reading Program. Over 100 kids signed up that day. The Buy One Get One Free Scholastic Book Fair started on Monday and will run thru Saturday, June 11th. Lots of quality childrens and young adult books at great prices. Your purchase also helps us get free books for the library and summer reading program prizes. So stop by and stock up on some great buys. The summer session of storytime starts next Tuesday, June 14th at 10:00, all preschool age children are welcome to attend. The Friends of the Library's annual ice cream social is next Thursday ,June 16th at 7:00 .m. at the depot. Come and enjoy delicious homemade ice cream and listen to the Community Band. On Tuesday June 21st singer/storyteller Thad Beach will be entertaining all ages at the fire station at 10:00. This for the young and the young at heart. We have something for everyone going on this summer, please come and join the fun!!!

The Garnett Public Library will be celebrating National Library Week April 11th-16th. On Tuesday, April 12th the Friends of the Library will be hosting an Open House from 10-6. Please stop by for a yummy cookie and to sign up for special prize drawings. Friday, Apr. 15th will be the FRIENDS ONLY Book Sale Preview starting at 7:00 p.m. We are still accepting book donations through Wednesday. The Book Sale will begin at 10:00 on Saturday.

"MY NAME IS MARY SUTTER" BOOK DISCUSSION

The Garnett Public Library will be sponsoring a discussion on the book "My Name is Mary Sutter" on Wednesday, April 27th at 7 p.m. This book is written by Robin Oliveira.

The Civil War offers a 20-year-old midwife who dreams of becoming a doctor the medical experience she craves, plus hard work and heartbreak. This book takes readers from a small upstate New York doctor's office to a Union hospital overflowing with the wounded and dying. Though she's too young for the nursing corps, Mary Sutter goes to Washington anyway. After a chance meeting with a presidential secretary, is led to the Union Hotel Hospital, where she assists chief surgeon William Stipp and becomes so integral to Stipp's work she ignores her mother's pleas to return home to deliver her sister's baby.

From a variety of perspectives-Mary, Stipp, their families, and social, political, and military leaders- this novel offers reader's a picture of a time of medical hardship, crisis, and opportunity.

Kevin J. Rabas of Emporia State University will lead a discussion of Shane by Jack Schaefer at 7 PM on Tuesday, April 12, sponsored by the Garnett Public Library, 125 W. 4th Ave.

This last book in a three-part “The Best of the West” series is a classic gunfighter’s tale of the Old West. The Wyoming plains of 1889 are rife with tension between the homesteaders, come to settle and to put down roots, and the cattlemen who've long enjoyed the freedom of the open range. Shane is the outsider, a mysterious stranger who arrives one day at the isolated family farm of Joe and Marian Starrett. Even as he comes to appreciate the peaceful home life of the Starretts, he is inevitably drawn into the conflict that threatens their future. Told through the eyes of the Starretts' young son, Bob, the story is rich with allegory, exploring Americans' contradictory yearnings for independence and domesticity. This is a West larger than life and deeply satisfying in its familiar rituals and its celebration of individual integrity.

The Talk About Literature in Kansas (TALK) book discussion series is provided by the Kansas Humanities Council (KHC), a nonprofit cultural organization with over 35 years of experience promoting understanding of the history and ideas that shape our lives and build community. Rabas is an assistant professor of English at Emporia State University, where he co-directs the Creative Writing Program. He received his Ph.D. in English from the University of Kansas. Rabas joined the KHC TALK program as a discussion leader in 2008.

Erin Pouppirt, Leawood, will lead a discussion of Buffalo Girls by Larry McMurtry at 7 PM on Tuesday, March 29, sponsored by the Garnett Public Library, 125 W. 4th Ave. Pouppirt is an independent scholar. She received her M.A. in Psychology and Counseling from the University of Kansas. Erin has been leading TALK discussions since 2008.

"The Best of the West" Book Discussion Series

The Garnett Public Library will offer a three-part book discussion series in March and April entitled "The Best of the West." Members of the community are invited to attend the free programs, which will take place at the library, 125 W. 4th Ave.

The series is sponsored by the Kansas Humanities Council, a nonprofit cultural organization, as part of its Talk About Literature in Kansas (TALK) program. The Council's Resource Center is furnishing the books and discussion leaders for the Overbrook TALK series. For more information about KHC, visit www.kansashumanities.org.

The first meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 17, at 7 PM. Joyce Thierer will lead a discussion of The Ox-Bow Incident by Walter Van Tilburg Clark, a tale about frontier justice. Thierer divides her time between Ride into History, an historical performance touring troupe, and teaching history for Emporia State University.

The Western experience remains the most colorful phase of American history. Western heroes began appearing in American fiction as early as the 1850s, and the "western" soon became a popular literary genre in its own right. This series looks at the West as land of adventure and of larger-than-life characters, but also explores some of the realities behind the myths.

Readers will enjoy also discussing Buffalo Girls by Larry McMurtry (March 29) and Shane by Jack Schaefer (April 12).

Ultimate Chili Challenge

The weather was a little blustery, but perfect for eating chili on Sunday night. There were 8 entries with a wide variety of tastes. Ingredients ranged from grape jelly to cinnamon! Violet Brownrigg was our winner. Dave Lybrager was the winner of our crockpot raffle.

The Friends of the Library are sponsoring an Ultimate Chili Challenge on Sunday, February 27th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. There are two ways to join in the fun:

Make a pot of your favorite chili and bring it to the library by 5:00 on the 27th, preferably in a crock-pot or insulated dish, OR you can come as a chili taster and judge which chili you like best. Voting containers will be placed by each entry and you may vote for your favorite chili by monetary donation. Whichever chili gets the most votes (money) will win a 1st place prize and the title of “Ultimate Chili Chef”. A raffle will also be held for a chili themed basket, chances are $1.00 each. This basket will be on display at the library prior to the event. Drinks, crackers, pickles and cake will also be served. Water for Elephants

The Garnett Public Library will be sponsoring a book discussion on Wednesday, January 26th at 7 p.m. The book “Water for Elephants” by Gruen was chosen. This is the story of Jacob Jankowski. When Jacob Jankowski, recently orphaned and suddenly adrift, jumps onto a passing train, he enters a world of freaks, drifters, and misfits, a second-rate circus struggling to survive during the Great Depression, making one-night stands in town after endless town. A veterinary student who almost earned his degree, Jacob is put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie. It is there that he meets Marlena, the beautiful young star of the equestrian act, who is married to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. He also meets Rosie, an elephant who seems untrainable until he discovers a way to reach her

Need a break? Want to get away? It’s that time of year. The Garnett Public Library is sponsoring its 10th anniversary of our adult reading program “Winter Getaway X”. This year’s program begins Monday, January 17th and runs through Friday, February 25th.

A Harvest of Friends

The Friends of the Library
will hold their annual membership meeting on
Tuesday, Nov. 9th at 5:30 p.m. in the Archer Room.

This year the Friends board has decided to have a

social hour for their annual meeting. We will begin the festivities at 5:30. Ian Rocker will be tickling the

ivories for us as we mingle and munch on delicious fall snacks. There will be a brief business meeting that will be followed by a powerpoint presentation of the past years activities. This year we have a couple of awesome door prizes that you don’t want to miss out on : A gift certificate for the Chamber Players and a gift certificate to the Coffee Loft. This program is for all moms-to-be and parents of infants up to 12 months. The first 30 moms will receive a FREE board book for their baby from the Garnett Public Library. "The Kitchen House"

The Garnett Public Library will be sponsoring another book discussion on Wednesday, October 27th at 7 p.m. The book “The Kitchen House” by Kathleen Grissom was chosen. This is the story of Lavinia, a seven-year-old girl, orphaned while onboard a ship from Ireland. She arrives on the steps of a tobacco plantation where she is to live and work with the slaves of the kitchen house.

The discussion will be held in the Archer Room at the library, led by Jane Feuerborn. Books will be available for checkout at the library.

This will be the last discussion until after the holidays.

"The Postmistress" Book Discussion

The Garnett Public Library will be sponsoring another book discussion on Wednesday, September 15th at 7 p.m. The book “The Postmistress” by Sarah Blake has been chosen.

What would happen if a postmistress chose not to deliver the mail?

It is 1940. While the war is raging in Europe, President Roosevelt promises he won't send American boys over to fight.

Iris James is the postmistress of Franklin, Massachusetts a small town at the end of Cape Cod. She firmly believes her job is to deliver and keep people's secrets, to pass along the news of love and sorrow that letters carry. Faithfully she stamps and sends the letters between people such as the newlyweds Emma and Will Fitch, who has gone to London to help out during the Blitz. But one day she slips a letter into her pocket, and leaves it there.

Meanwhile, seemingly fearless radio gal, Frankie Bard is reporting the Blitz from London, her dispatches crinkling across the Atlantic, imploring listeners to pay attention. Then in the last desperate days of the summer of 1941, she rides the trains out of Germany, reporting on what is happening to the refugees there.

Alternating between an America on the eve of entering into World War II, still safe and snug in its inability to grasp the danger at hand, an a Europe being torn apart by war, the two stories collide in a letter, bringing the war finally home to Franklin.

The discussion will be held in the Archer Room at the library, led by Jane Feuerborn. Books are available for checkout at the library.

Musician and storyteller Alan Cunningham will be performing at the fire station on Tuesday, July 13th at 10:00. Alan has been teaching music for many years. He has taught K-12th and has been teaching K-5th for 18 years. A lot of the songs he has written have come from being around kids. When he is not teaching Alan loves to go around the midwest and sing his songs for kids. His program includes many of his original songs and the stories that go along with them. Alan loves seeing kids having a good time, singing, moving and playing instruments. Alan's shows are a blast and everyone from 2 to 82 always has a great time. Everyone is welcome to attend. This program is sponsored by the Garnett Public Library.

Tuesday, June 22nd at 10:00 in the Archer Room – Splash into the library for some water logged, fun filled Native American animal stories for the whole family. The final book in our TALK series "Childhood Classics" is The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The first of C. S. Lewis's seven "Chronicles of Narnia," The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe remains one of the most frequently read of all children's classics some 50 years after its publication. The superbly-written novel follows the . adventures of four children who pass through a magic wardrobe into the sometimes dangerous and always exciting land of Narnia. Along the way, the children, aided by a noble lion, dedicate themselves to freeing Narnia from the spell of the White Witch. This mission requires them to learn about the nature of good and evil, the sources of courage, and ultimately, the role of love and sacrifice in our lives. Lewis is well known for his fiction, science fiction, and Christian essays for adult readers, but his Narnia series stands out as one of the literary treasures of the 20th century. LIBRARY OPEN HOUSE - Tuesday. April 13th from 10:00-6:00 Please stop by the library and join us in celebrating National Library Week. The Friends of the Library will be providing refreshments. Adult and YA patrons will be able to register for door prizes. All children will receive a balloon and a sticker, older kids will receive a tattoo and a pencil. This will also be the day that we take part in “Snapshot: A Day in the Life of Kansas Libraries”. We will be collecting statistics about check-outs, computer usage and reference questions. The Little Princess Book Discussion

The third book in our TALK series "Childhood Classics" is The Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849-1924). Burnett's turn-of-the-century Cinderella story tells of a little girl who goes from riches to rags to riches again, all along maintaining her compassion and love for those around her. After wealthy Sara Crewe moves into a strict girls' boarding school, she learns that her father is dead, leaving her both penniless and an orphan. Her faith in her father and her sense of justice enable her to overcome poverty, hardship, and abuse, and to create her own family and community. Burnett, a playwright and novelist for adults before she wrote children's books, never oversimplifies the complexities of a dangerous world; at the same time, she never forgets what it's like to view that world as a hopeful child. "The Help" Book Discussion

As part of our National Library Week Celebration the Garnett Public Library will be hosting a book discussion of the book "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett.

This debut novel is set during the nascent civil rights movement in Jackson, Miss., where black women were trusted to raise white children but not to polish the household silver. Eugenia Skeeter Phelan is just home from college in 1962, and, anxious to become a writer, is advised to hone her chops by writing about what disturbs you. The budding social activist begins to collect the stories of the black women on whom the country club sets relies and mistrusts enlisting the help of Aibileen, a maid who's raised 17 children, and Aibileen's best friend Minny, who's found herself unemployed more than a few times after mouthing off to her white employers. The book Skeeter puts together based on their stories is scathing and shocking, bringing pride and hope to the black community, while giving Skeeter the courage to break down her personal boundaries and pursue her dreams.

Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry

The second book in the TALK series "Childhood Classics" will be "Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry". The discussion will be held on Tuesday, March 30th ,at 7:00p.m. in the Archer Room. The discussion leader will be scholar Ann Birney.

Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor is the story of 4th grader Cassie Logan's tenth year. It is also the story of a black farming family in the south in the thirties, a time of racial tension and diminished opportuinty for people of color. Young Cassie must confront the realities of racial dicrimination as she comes to appreciate her family's dignity and determination in preserving their land and their heritage. This coming of age story leads readers through fear and hope as Cassie learns to trust here own heart and take pride in her life, Mildred Taylor's modern-day classic won the prestigious Newberry Award in 1977.

This series is sponsored by the Kansas Humanities Council and the Friends of the Garnett Public Library. Books are available for checkout at the library, everyone is welcome to attend and refreshments will be served.

Another Successful Adult Reading Program

Once again we had another great Adult Reading Program. 56 people attended the celebration party on Monday, March 21st. We had lots of yummy pie, we played "What's My Line?" and gave away fabulous door prizes. Our grand prize winner was MArilyn McDonald. Overall we had 74 participants, 61 who read 5 or more books and a total of 591 books were read. A special thanks goes out to the Friends of the Library, and all the businesses and individuals who donated prizes.

CHILDHOOD CLASSICS

The Garnett Public Library will present a four-part book discussion series in March and April on "Childhood Classics" Members of the community are invited to attend the free programs which will take place at the the library in the Archer Room.

The series is sponsored by the Kansas Humanities Council, a nonprofit cultural organization, as part of the Talk About Literature in Kansas (TALK ) program. The Friends of the Library are also sponsors of this series.

'The first meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 16th at 7:00 p.m. Sandra Wiechert, Lawrence, will lead a discussion of "The Jungle Book", Rudyard Kipling's classic tale of the orphan child Mowgli, raised by wolves.

The idea of a special literature for children dates only to the nineteenth century, when writers began to produce both fantasy and realistic family stories for young readers. "Childhood Classics" features some of the most enduring books written for children over the past centuty in the United States and Great Britain, Adult readers will discover that the books that entertained and educated them as children have much to say to them now about courage and faith, friendship, character, and the power of love. In this series readers will also discuss "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry" by Mildred Taylor (March 30), "A Little Princess" by Frances Hodgson Burnett (April 15) and "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" by C.S. Lewis (April 29).

2010 Kansas Reads …Dreams from My Father by Barack Obama

"Dreams from My Father" was the book chosen as our statewide reading and discussion project sponsored by the Kansas Center for the Book and the Kansas Humanities Council. This book was recommended by a committee of experienced and qualified librarians and educators for its broad-based appeal that encourages and sustains spirited discussion.

Before Barack Obama was elected President of the United States, and even before he entered politics, he needed to know more about the meaning of his life as a black American. "Dreams from My Father" is a moving memoir of his traumatic journey to discover his heritage.

There will be a book discussion, lead by Jane Feuerborn, on Wednesday, February 24^th at 7 p.m. in the Archer Room at the Garnett Public Library. Stop by the library to enquire about a copy of the book.

Adult Reading Program off to an exciting start!!!!

46 people attended the kickoff for the Adult Reading Program. It was a fun filled evening of food and games. We started out with an Olympic Torch Relay, headed up by Kate Fink as our torch bearer. After a yummy snack we move on to Olympic Trivia. For the highlight of the evening we played the first, last and only Olympic version of musical chairs. Everyone had a great time. If you want to join the fun and come to our next event on Monday, Feb. 1st at 6:15, please RSVP for supper by Thursday Jan. 28th. Of course you are welcome to join the program at any time even if you cannot attend our events. Stop by the library and check out our grand prize!

Adult Reading Program Kick Off Party

Need a break? Want to get away? It’s that time of year. The Garnett Public Library is sponsoring its adult reading program “Winter Getaway XI”. This year’s program begins Monday, January 18th and runs through Monday, February 26th.

This year’s plans include a kick-off party Monday, January 18th at 7 p.m. in the Archer Room here at the library. There will be refreshments served, an explanation of the program, a get acquainted activity and a prize or two. Pleae meet in the main library (yes, Sharon has a suprise planned). Everyone eighteen years of age and older is welcome to participate. On Monday, February 1st at 6:15 p.m. will be the midway event. The Winter Getaway Program will conclude on Friday, February 26th with a celebration party on Monday, March 1st at 7 p.m. in the Archer Room at the library.

We want to encourage adults to read. If you are already a reader or haven’t read in awhile, come join the fun. Please don’t confuse this with the library’s “Let’s Talk About It” discussion series. This event is designed to allow a reader to choose their own material and their own pace. A minimum of five books read will make you eligible for the grand prize drawing.

A Taste of the Holidays

The Garnett Public Library, along with generous support from the Friends of the Library, will be hosting “A Taste of the Holidays” on Wednesday, December 16th. The event will take place in the Archer Room at the library from 11a.m. to 2 p.m. It is a come when you can event. There will be sandwiches and goodies galore accompanied by holiday music with Ian Rocker.

Have you been in and registered for your new library card yet? Your old card is no longer valid as of Oct. 22nd. Allow a little extra time when you come in as the staff has to verify information and sign you up for email alterts and internet access, if you wish. There are many benefits to the patrons with our new system and some of our patrons have already been placing holds and renewing items online. A word of advice, your wait will probably be shortest if you do not come in between 3:30 and 5:30 :). Thanks for your patience as the staff learns all the features of the new system.

Online at the Garnett Public Library

The Garnett Public Library is getting a new online library catalog for library services and library users will see big changes in the amount of features the online catalog system has available. The Garnett Public Library is a member of the Southeast Kansas Library System and has joined a consortium which will include 17 libraries in the region. The SEKnFind (seek-n-find) catalog already includes libraries from Bronson, Chanute, Coffeyville, Galena, Howard, Independence, Iola, Hamilton, Parker, Savonburg, and Madison. Joining in October will be Garnett, Caney, Columbus, Erie, Oswego and Fredonia.

Users will be able to search the consolidated catalog for books and materials of all of the SEKnFind libraries and place a hold on items from any of the member libraries. The requested items will be transferred between libraries for checkout by the person requesting them. Users can limit their search to items only at Garnett by using the "Advanced Search" and choosing Garnett for the list of libraries, or by logging in so that the catalog will recognize which library they are registered with. Book jacket art will be visible from the online card catalog and users will see that the catalog has an Amazon.com feel to it. Library users can tag items in the catalog with search terms and place comments on individual items. These two features will be seen by other library users to make the catalog friendlier and easier to use. Users can compile lists of books and other materials, and either make them public or keep them private. They can also change their password or submit changes of information such as their address and can check their reading history, renew items that are eligible for renewal, see what items they have checked out, what is overdue and what their fines are.

The library will be closed on Wed. Oct., 21^st for staff training and preparation for the change over. The "go live" date is tenatively set for Oct. 22^nd. The library will begin issuing new library cards starting on that date. In preparation for this event, we are asking all patrons to please assist us by paying all fines and returning all overdue materials prior to that time. A new card cannot be issued until all issues are resolved.

The third and final book in our Talk About Literature in Kansas series - Kansas Literary Heritage - will be "Trail of the Spanish Bit" by Don Coldsmith.

Hardship, disappointment, sickness, death, claim jumpers, and a variety of natural disasters could not chase Rosie and Henry Ise from the land they settled. These vivid stories, often based in historical fact, portray John Ise's parents' quest to attain the American dream in north central Kansas. Rosie embodied the spirit of the pioneer woman, enterprising, determined, and altruistic. She gave birth to twelve children and worked the land at Henry's side without complaint. Henry, on the other hand, was fair and honest but often put his family at risk because of his giving heart. Rosie and Henry survived numerous difficulties and built a future for themselves and their children, but at what cost?

"Picnic"

Picnic by William Inge will be the second book in the TALK Series - Kansas Literary Heritage.

William Inge, another Kansas native, rejects the romantic view of a small town as cozy and wholesome. Instead, he paints a picture of characters, particularly women, trapped and frustrated by a small town's rigid expectations and mores. The arrival of Hal, a stranger in the community, challenges Madge and Rosemary as well as the other women to face their dissatisfaction with the roles they are playing. Inge suggests an answer for the characters in their struggle to find happiness and to be recognized for who and what they are. He draws on his experiences growing up in the southeast Kansas town of Independence for this play, written in 1953. The discussion for "Picnic" will be led by Richard Keller from Emporia State University on Thursday, March 26th at 7:00 p.m. The book is available for check-out from the library. Area children read to on Dr. Seuss's Birthday

Dr. Seuss would have been 104 on Monday, March 2nd. To celebrate this occasion and to promote reading, Amanda Teal, Youth Services Librarian read to the local kindergarten and 1st grade classes. Over 150 kids were read to. As part of our celebrations the children were given cookies and everyone was entered in a drawing for a stuffed Cat in the Hat and a copy of the book. The lucky winner was Riley Malone, daughter of Joe and Kari Malone.

Kansas Literary Heritage

Kansas has often been viewed as backward, desolate, and isolated, a place to drive through, but never a place to stop. Yet in The Wizard of OZ Dorothy wanted to leave the exotic-Emerald City and go home to the sun-baked, wind-eroded land of Kansas. It may be that Kansans' deep allegiance to the land, to our common values, and to our strong sense of community is our state's greatest strength.
Kansas literature highlights the dignity of the pioneers who settled this land. They withstood tornadoes and blizzards, grasshopper invasions and other disasters to build their future. African Americans, seeing Kansas as the "Promised Land," pioneered here in order to be free. To attain their goals, they struggled not only with physical hardships but also with racial prejudice. Their lives and the lives of other Kansas immigrants were shaped by the landscape and grounded in the solid faith that gave them hope.
Kansas is a paradox. Its landscape stretches from the rolling hills and urban areas of the east to the golden-brown, barren plains of the western boundaries with their quiet rural setting. Kansans believe they are conservative. They value hard work, economic prosperity, honesty, and faith in God. Yet Kansans have also been at the forefront of progressive social, educational, and health reforms. Kansas was one of the first states to grant women's suffrage and led the field in public health education.
Our literary heritage celebrates these many dimensions of the Kansas character.
The books in this series reflect the contrasts in the landscapes, in the people, and between generations, as well as the image of the small town, of the pioneering spirit, and the strength of Kansas women. Although Kansas may struggle with its image, the picture that will linger in readers' minds after exploring these selections by Kansas authors is one of survival and strength of mind.

The Celebration Party for the Adult Reading Program was held on Feb. 26th. We had a great turnout and a lot of fun. We played Family Feud and found out that many of our participants have a very good sense of humor. As usual we had yummy food courtesy of Sharon. Over the course of the program we had 61 patrons participating and they read over 500 books. WHY I LOVE MY LIBRARY CONTEST WINNER!!

As part of the Winter Getaway VIII the library sponsored a contest about "Why I Love My Library". The adult reading program participants were invited to write a short entry on the theme. We had 9 wonderful entries. Sharon and I were very glad we were not the judges!! The winning entry was written by Wilma Powls. WHY I LOVE MY LIBRARY

My life is so exciting! Two weeks ago I felt the 2 martini experience of deep sea diving too fast and too deep. Last week I exhausted myself climbing to the ruins of the cliff dwellers in the Southwest. Just yesterday I was running from a firestorm in the mountains. I just barely made it to the sandy area in time to deploy my silver tent to allow the fire to travel over me. It was terrifying! The wind was blowing so hard I could hardly hold my tent around me and the fire was so hot I thought my flesh would surely melt off me; but I suffered no burns. I'm OK because I did it all through the Garnett Public Library. My library. Any experience I desire I can live through the books I check out of my library. Once in a while I have to take a time off from reading to allow my adrenaline to settle down.
If I don't find what I want in MY library I can have it ordered from the lending library. My librarian, Andrea, and her staff will do anything in their power to help me find what I need for research or entertainment. They also have excellent social activities that are very enjoyable such as the TALK ABOUT IT series or the MIDWINTER BREAK. Oh, and did I mention these activities are usually accompanied by food to die for thanks to Sharon. There is no end of activities for the young of all ages from pre-school to teens.
My library also has the WALKER ART COLLECTION along with the city art collection plus the rotating local artists display and collections. Of course the daily and weekly news publications are always available along with almost any magazine publication one would want to read. One needs income tax forms, they are there, too. If you need a computer you will find it there. My library has 34,000 volumes and circulates 49,000 items a year.

The Coffee Nook is ready to go!!

We have completed the purchase of all the furnishings for the Coffee Nook! Funding was made possible in part by a grant from the SEK Library System. We will have coffee available daily, along with hot water for tea and cocoa. You can even bring your lunch in and relax over your noon hour if you like. All we ask is that you keep your food and drink in the Coffee Nook area. The chairs are rather comfy so go ahead and relax for a few minutes with a good book, the local news or your favorite magazine. You can even bring in your laptop if you like.

WINTER GETAWAY VIII

Need a break? Want to get away? It’s that time of year. The Garnett Public Library is sponsoring its adult reading program “Winter Getaway VIII”. This year’s program begins Monday, January 12th and runs through Monday, February 23rd.

This year’s plans include a kick-off party Monday, January 12th at 7 p.m. in the Archer Room here at the library. There will be refreshments served, an explanation of the program, a get acquainted activity and a prize or two. Everyone eighteen years of age and older is welcome to participate. On Wednesday, February 4th at 6:15 p.m. will be the midway event with guest author Nancy Pickard. Ms Pickard’s book “The Virgin of Small Plains” was chosen as the Kansas Reads book. This is a statewide project that encourages Kansas adults to read, discuss and experience the same book. This is sponsored by the Kansas Center for the Book at the State Library and promoted by Kansas libraries. We are incorporating this project into our winter program, hoping to reach more people with Ms Pickard’s book. The Winter Getaway Program will conclude on Monday, February 23rd with a celebration party on Thursday, February 26th at 7 p.m. in the Archer Room at the library.

We want to encourage adults to read. If you are already a reader or haven’t read in awhile, come join the fun. Please don’t confuse this with the library’s “Let’s Talk About It” discussion series. This event is designed to allow a reader to choose their own material and their own pace. A minimum of five books read will make you eligible for the grand prize drawing.

A TASTE OF THE HOLIDAYS

The Garnett Public Library, along with generous support from the Friends of the Library, will be hosting “A Taste of the Holidays” on Wednesday, December 17th. The event will take place in the Archer Room at the library from 11a.m. to 2 p.m. It is a come when you can event. There will be sandwiches and goodies galore accompanied by holiday music with B.J. Stewart.

This idea has been borrowed from other libraries to simply wish their patrons a happy holiday season. The staff invites you to come and spend a little time with us.

Kid's Heatlh Fair

Saturday Nov. 15th 10:00-12:00, the Garnett Public library will be hosting a Kid's Health Fair in honor of Kansas Reads to Preschoolers Week. Special guests from Anderson County Hospital, Nancy Schuster from the extension office and other volunteers will be helping with this event. The children will be weighed, they will get a healthy snack, learn about proper hand washing, and will get to listen to their heart along with other health related activities. Of course we will also be reading the books "Bear feels sick" and "Don't you feel well, Sam?" Each preschool child that attends will receive a free book and will be eligible for the free drawing for a copy of "Bear feels sick", a handmade quilt and a cuddly teddy bear. All preschool age children are welcome to attend.

JAMES NAISMITH TO SPEAK AT FOL ANNUAL MEETING

The Friends of the Library will hold their annual membership meeting on Monday, Nov. 10th at 7:00 p.m. in the Archer Room. James Naismith the inventor of basketball will be our guest speaker. In 1891, Mr. Naismith invented basketball as a class assignment at the YMCA Training School in Springfield, MA. After completing his medical degree, he came to Lawrence in 1898 to serve as the college chaplain and physical education professor for the University of Kansas. Popularized through the “Y” network across North America and Europe, basketball quickly became Naismith’s legacy. Come and enjoy listening to this Canada-born professor talk about his invention.
This is a first-person portrayal of Naismith as part of Kansas Humanities Ccouncil’s History Alive program. James Naismith will be portrayed by William Worley, an adjunct professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and a historical consultant on Kansas City regional history. He holds a Ph.D. in history from the University of Kansas. Dr Worley’s research interests focus on urban geography, the American suburb, social and community history. He has portrayed Presidents Harry S. Truman and James Madison and explorer William Clark. Dr. Worley joined the KHC History Alive program in 1993 and also portrays August Bondi.

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Garnett Public Library and the Kansas Humanities Council.

The program will be preceded by a short business meeting including a PowerPoint presentation of the past years events. As usual there will also be refreshments. Everyone is welcome to attend, please mark your calendars and bring a friend!!!

The adult reading program is off to a great start with over 20 people attending our kick-off party. We played games, everything from chinese checkers to craps. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed the food and prizes. Our next event is on Friday, Feb. 8th at 7:00 p.m. Of course there will be more fun and rumor has it that might be "pie night", the regulars know what that means - yummy yummy!!! Behind Barbed Wire: Midwest POWs in Nazi Germany

Hardly anyone alive today is aware that the first U.S. troops sent to fight in WWII came from the Upper Midwest, or that the region’s 34th “Red Bull” Division served the longest uninterrupted duty in U.S. military history—about 600 days. Even fewer know that, some 1,800 mostly Midwest soldiers were captured in one night in North Africa in February 1943. Until the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944 the most U.S. POWs in Nazi-German camps came, per capita, from same region.
“Behind Barbed Wire”, a new exhibit that is touring the Great Plains states in fall 2007, explores the experiences of Midwest prisoners of war (POWs) who were imprisoned in Hitler’s Third Reich, and the human context in which their experiences took place. The St. Paul-based, non-profit educational organization TRACES is bringing these stories to life through the creation of its BUS-eum a 40 foot school bust converted into a mobile museum.
The exhibit consists of narrative display panels illustrated with photographs and documents, audio and DVD documentaries, artifacts and more. This exhibit will bring the stories of Midwest POWs in Nazi Germany to both large and small communities around the region. Remembering the experiences of the POWs in their communities of origin is a unique adventure in U.S. history. The BUS-eum is the only known mobile museum in the nation focused on the experiences and related historical contexts of U.S. POWs. TRACES will bring it to both Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma between Labor Day and Veterans Day, fall 2007. The BUS-eum will visit the seven other Midwestern states in the next two years.

The Bus-eum will be in Garnett from 10:00-1:00 on Saturday, Oct. 27th; it will be located in the parking lot beside the fire station. In addition tot he tour we will also be hosting a "Community Conversation" about the five primary questions that "Behind Barbed Wire" poses:

1.) Why did some Midwest POWs survive certain conditions or experiences, while others did not?
2.) What roles did art, free-time, and religion play in helping those men who did survive imprisonment by the Nazi regime?
3.) Why did some Germans or Austrians assist U.S. POWs, while others did not?
4.) How did the liberated POWs later come to terms with their own experiences, and
5.) How do nations and the individuals who constitute a nation come to reconciliation?

The "Community Conversation" will be held at 11:00 on Saturday, Oct. 27th, in the meeting room of the fire station. If there is enough interest, additional discussions will be held during the viewing time.

STORYTELLER TO PERFORM AT CORNFEST

Steve Otto is a full time freelance storyteller from the Kansas City area, he has over 30 years of storytelling, after dinner speaking, theatre, corporate training, video and television experience and is a traveling Artist through the Missouri Humanities Council. He has been telling stories as as full time freelance storyteller since 1995, presenting programs to schools, libraries, churches government agencies and community organizations all over the country. he has participated as a feature or regional teller in many nationally known storytelling festivals and promotes the philosophy that...storytelling is not just for entertainment!

Through his company, "Creative Communication Through Storytelling", he has developed seminars which allow parents librarians, teachers, senior citizens, children and the business community to better COMMUNICATE, TEACH and LEARN! He teaches the use of the same techniques used by full time freelance storytellers to develop communication skills.

Mr. Otto will perform at 11:00 at the Cornucopia Tent. His program of stories is great for all ages, Please plan to join us for a fun filled time sponsored by the Friends of the Garnett Public Library.

Sheriff Brownrigg gave a very interesting presentation on fingerprinting and how they collect evidence at a crime scene. All the kids fingerprinted themselves and determined what type of prints they had.

FOOD FEAR FACTOR - We found 8 willing suckers to eat (ok, mostly it was try to eat) pickled pigs feet, pickled eggs, oysters and sardines - YUCK!!!!!!

Winter Getaway VI - Ending Party

The ending party for Winter Getaway VI was held last Friday night. We had a scavenger hunt. We divided everyone into teams and sent them out. Did they come to your house? More importantly did you get your stuff back? The winning team managed to find all the items in the alotted time. Sharon and I have a made list of the most resourceful people in case we are ever stranded on an island - we know who we want with us!! We also drew for the remaining prizes and the grand prize basket. Joella Phares was the lucky winner of the grand prize. Of course for some people the best part was Sharon's pie. Yummmmm.

Winter Getaway VI

The Adult Reading Program is well underway. So far 47 participants have read 198 books!! The weather wreaked havoc with our original plans for last night but we revamped and still had a great time. Over 30 people showed up for our evening of food and entertainment. We played a very, very modified version of the newlywed game - we called it The Family Game. As you can tell from the pictures 4 couples agreed (??) to play our game. Melvin & Carol Bauck were our lucky winners, the mother daughter team of Kitty Mace and Carla King got second, and third place was taken by Allan and JoAnne Highberger, our sister team of Connie Setter and Linda Kipper need to spend a little more time together as they came in last.

KU professor J. Edgar Tidwell will present a program on Gordon Parks on Monday, January 29th at 7 p.m. here at the library. He will discuss how Parks managed to reach such remarkable literary, artistic and cultural success.

“The Learning Tree” by Gordon Parks was chosen by a panel of Kansas librarians for the One book, One state reading project because of its broad-based appeal. Mr. Parks was born at Fort Scott in 1912 at a time full of uncertainty and contradictions for African Americans. This book is a remembrance of racial segregation.

Friends of the Library Membership Drive and Valentine Basket Raffle

The Friends of the Library annual membership drive will begin on Monday January 15th. The Friends will have a table set up in the library from the 15th-27th. Friends members will be on hand to greet you and (of course) take your yearly dues. If you cannot make it in during that period, we will be happy to take your dues at any time. Be sure and keep an eye on the thermometer signs, to monitor the progress of the drive. You may pay dues at the amount you would like, starting at $5.00 and up. The money raised is used by the Friends to buy DVD’s, audios, large print books, as well as to help sponsor the Summer Reading Program, the Adult Reading Program, the Let’s Talk About it Series, mailing of the newsletter and numerous other projects and services. Join your Friends in supporting your local library.

The Friends of the library are raffling off a basket of Valentine goodies. The contents include a teddy bear, some lingerie, yummy chocolates and many other romantic items. The basket has a value of close to $150.00. Tickets are $1.00 each. The basket will be on display at the library. The drawing will be held just before Valentines. Hope everyone had a wonderful holdiay season . We are finally getting all the Christmas decorations down at the library. We are gearing up for another busy year.

The adult reading program will be our first event of the year. The sixth annual “Winter Getaway” will begin Wednesday, January 17th. There will be a kick-off party that evening at 7 p.m. at the Library. Join us for fun, food and games. Everyone eighteen years of age and older is welcome to participate. Last year there were over 40 participants. The rules are simple - read some books, record the titles, win some prizes!! Sounds simple enough, doesn’t it? Where would you like to “getaway” to? How about a little romance, or murder and mayhem, a trip to the wild west, or do you dream about traveling in outer space?

KU professor John Edgar Tidwell will present a program on Gordon Parks on Monday, January 29th at 7 p.m. here at the library. He will discuss how Parks managed to reach such remarkable literary, artistic and cultural success.

AUTHOR LORA REITER TO PRESENT AT THE LIBRARY

The Garnett Public Library plans to have a series of programs by Kansas Authors. We hope to have 3 different programs over the next few months. Our first guest will be Lora Reiter on Thursday Nov. 2nd at 7:00 p.m. in the Archer Room at the library LORA K. REITER is a native Kansan who makes her home in Ottawa. Daughter of essayist-poet Lora D. Reiter, she says she learned very early about the mystery of writing by watching, late at night and with considerable respect, the shadow--cast by a kerosene lamp--of her mother as she wrote. "I was caught up in writing before I even knew there was content associated with it," Reiter says. Although she has lived in Mexico and France and traveled in Europe and Asia, Reiter loves the spaces, the landscapes and the animals of her native state, "especially the Flint Hills around Alma and especially horses.” Reiter graduated from Beloit High School in north central Kansas, the setting of her novel. Then she earned her B. A. and Ph. D. from KU (M.A. from St. Louis U.).While she has made her living
as an English professor (St. Louis University, Kalamazoo College in Michigan, and Ottawa University), Reiter has written all her life, primarily poetry and short stories, dozens of which have been published regionally and nationally and earned her prizes from "little magazines" (academic journals), the Kansas Authors Club, and Kansas Voices. She has just completed a collection of essays: Animals Galore and Love Unconditional, and she is working on a second: From Ash Creek to China and Back. Other work in progress includes Letters to Joshua, a collection of correspondence and reflections relative to a young man's service in Iraq, and Mother and Me, a study of two generations of writers. "To David," a poem, is included in the January, 2006 issue of The I-70 Review. Lora K. Reiter is a former TALK scholar (Talk About Literature in Kansas) for the Kansas Council on the Humanities, having led over forty discussions at public libraries and retirement centers. She is also a frequent speaker for various organizations. The program is free of charge and open to the public.

Join us at Cornfest for a fun filled time of stories and music. The Friends of the Library, The Kansas Arts Council and the Southeast Kansas Library System are sponsoring Alan Cunningham and Priscilla Howe at Cornstock. Alan will perform at 10:00 & 12:00, Priscilla will perform at 11:00 and 1:00. You can find us near the Little Niblets Gameland by the upper tennis courts. just follow the sound of the laughter! These programs are free of charge.

Alan Cunningham has been writing songs and teaching elementary music for the past twenty years. He has a wife, three kids, and a dog in a house he built in the country. He started writing and sharing his songs with his students and now enjoys sharing them with kids all around the region. Alan is a very talented musician and songwriter who combines his songs with unusual stories of how each one was written. His audiences laugh and sing along as they move to the music. A wonderful time for kids young and old!

Get ready to listen and laugh with storyteller Priscilla Howe, who tells a mix of folktales and stories from books, all served up with a generous dollop of humor. Priscilla has performed in the area several times in the past and is best known for the story "The ghost with the one black eye". She'll have some help from her mouthy handpuppet Trixie. Come prepared to join in!

Our camp was attended by 28-30 kids daily. They ranged in age from K-4th grades completed. We had a lot of fun listening to stories, making crafts, playing games and meeting new friends

Did you know that you can color salt? Well we did and it turned out wonderful!

The following pictures are from our Intergenerational Day. We made birdfeeders from 2 litre bottles and played bingo. In the process everyone made new friends and had a lot of fun.

It was a Hawaiian theme for the Late Night at the Library Party. Only teens who had actually turned in reading were eligible to come. We had 9 kids attend the party. We played games , ate yummy snacks and made salt art bottles.
